Calcium deficiency in children:
Children and adolescents need maximum amount of calcium as compared to rest of the age groups. The amount of calcium taken in extra is for the formation and growth of bones. There is chance of children to born with calcium deficiency due to calcium deficiency in mothers.so,those children be liable to develop weak bones which do not grow as needed. such children may also tend to have indigestion and diarrhea. The adequate calcium intake at a younger age avoids conditions like osteoporosis and osteomalacia .
Calcium deficiency in children may lead to rickets, which results in bone deformities and growth retardation. In children, calcium deficiency may result in osteomalacia, which is a softening of the bones.Osteoporosis refers to the degeneration of already constructed bone, making them brittle, while osteomalacia is an abnormality in the building process of bone, making them soft.
Osteoporosis symptoms may also include frequent fractures and a loss of height as the spine compresses. Osteomalacia can also result in muscle weakness, usually in your arms and legs. Extremely low levels of calcium in the blood may result in muscle spasms and leg cramps. It is also generally well accepted that low calcium intake contributes greatly to high blood pressure and osteoporosis.
Calcium deficiency not only weakens bones but also results in tooth decay as the maximum amounts of calcium in body is stored in bones and teeth.
